I have seen a lot of great reviews lately for L’Oreal’s new series of glossy lipsticks, the Colour Riche Shine Lipsticks.
They are part gloss, part lip balm, and part color, and just about everyone who has tried it has very much approved.
So I made a stop at CVS the other day, and the new line was right in the front of the store. I figured it was a sign from heaven, that the drugstore would make it so convenient to pick up the product I have been hearing so much about.
I bought the color ‘Varnished Rosewood’, which is right up my alley, being a muted browny pink – I probably have two dozen lipsticks in various shades of muted browny pink. I have mattes and cremes and glosses and liquids – and I pretty much love them all.
‘Varnished Rosewood’ is no exception to my love for this “your lips but better” shade.
It is pinker on my lips than some of my other neutrals, and it is so nice to have a pretty, feminine shine after a winter full of darkish, brownish, mattes.
The staying power is not great – but this is to be expected from a balm/gloss. Those matte liquids that dry down are capable of staining your lips for days, and certainly have their place, but the warmer weather just seems to call for a healthier (if temporary) shine. I did find that I achieved a bit more lasting color by using a soft lip liner in a neutral shade all over my lips first. (I like Urban Decay’s ‘Broken’ for this. It doesn’t change my lip color at all, and so the true color of the ‘Varnished Rosewood’ comes through.
The Colour Riche shine lipstick feels very good on the lips – not slimy or sticky. It definitely feels moisturizing, and the color is richer than with just a tinted balm. (And although it’s what’s inside that counts, the case is extremely pretty and looks like a more expensive lipstick than it is.)
BTW, I’ve seen it priced anywhere between $7.99 and $9.99 – and of course, it was $9.99 in my neck of the woods. Have you noticed that drugstore makeup is getting more expensive? It’s annoying, but I have also seen dramatic improvements in the quality of drugstore makeup over the last couple of years.
I like the Colour Riche Shine lipstick in ‘Varnished Rosewood’ enough that I may consider picking up another shade or two. ‘Glossy Fawn’, which is a neutral or ‘Burnished Blush’ for something pinker are two I would consider.
Here’s Varnished Rosewood:
Here it is in natural light. I was stuck in a traffic jam, so why not make the best of it?
By the way, I am looking for a good lipstick with a high SPF for summer…. any suggestions?
